Benfica Kick Off Champions League With Vital Victory In Belgrade

Benfica kick off Champions League with vital victory in Belgrade

First-half goals from Rafa Silva and Alexander Bah earns Benfica a precious victory over Crvena zvezda in the opening match of Group H

Portuguese giants Benfica made a winning start to their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Crvena zvezda in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Rafa Silva fired the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute, before Alexander Bah doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark.

Favourites Benfica edge past spirited Crvena zvezda

Benfica, who reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season, were heavy favourites against the Serbian champions.

However, Crvena zvezda gave a spirited performance and could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Aleksandar Katai's shot was well saved by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

But Benfica gradually took control of the game and deservedly went ahead when Silva finished off a fine move involving Joao Mario and Goncalo Ramos.

Bah made it 2-0 just seven minutes later, capitalising on a poor clearance from Crvena zvezda goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

The home side pushed for a goal after the break, but Benfica defended resolutely and held on for a comfortable victory.

Silva and Bah on target as Benfica secure three points

Silva's goal was his second in the Champions League this season, while Bah scored his first.

The victory gives Benfica a valuable three points in Group H, which also includes Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Benfica will now turn their attention to their next match, at home to Maccabi Haifa on September 14.
