Pan American Health Organization Issues Epidemiological Alert

Rare Disease Spread by Midges Poses Serious Health Risks

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiological alert for Oropouche virus, a rare disease spread by midges. As cases rise across Latin America, health officials are urging caution and preparedness.

Oropouche virus is characterized by flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, joint pain, and muscle pain. In severe cases, it can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and neurological complications.

The increase in cases is particularly concerning as it has been reported in areas where the virus has not historically been recorded. Health experts believe that climate change may be a contributing factor to the spread of the virus, as midges are more likely to thrive in warmer temperatures.

PAHO is working with national health authorities to monitor the situation and provide technical support to affected countries. Measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus, including vector control and public education campaigns.

If you are traveling to Latin America, it is important to take precautions to protect yourself from Oropouche virus, such as using insect repellent and wearing long, loose clothing. Symptoms of the virus can appear within 3-12 days after being bitten by an infected midge.
